Growing up eating breakfast was not my thing at all. I can still remember my father forcing me to drink hot milk before going to school. It was just horrible!I remembered I liked breakfast when I was on holiday and he used to bitch about that because he didn’t understand why I ate breakfast on vacation and not school days. Anyways, that was just the way it was.
When I got a little bit older and I was living in the Philippines, I would just completely skip breakfast. I know now that that’s not good. At that point, my father gave up forcing me to eat breakfast. The thing is, if I ate breakfast and then rode a car, I just would feel so nauseous. I then realized that eating breakfast early morning, like before 8AM was just not possible for me. I also realized that I loved Filipino breakfast contrary to the continental breakfast.
But now that I’m 30, married, and a mother, I thankfully don’t skip breakfast anymore. Sometimes I wish I could just drink a cup of coffee and be off to work, but that’s not the example I want to show my daughter. What’s great about aging (LOL) is that you are more aware of your body and what works for you. We have breakfast every morning at 6AM during the week and thankfully I don’t feel nauseous when I have to drive the car after. Thankfully, Baby Girl is nothing like me and she likes eating breakfast.
So here’s what we have for breakfast. I’ve separated the ideas in different categories: quick breakfast, breakfast with time preparation, and the glorious brunch.
Quick Breakfast
Nocciolata – 3.34 Euros
Kellogg’s Extra (2.81 Euros in Cora)
Milk
Orange Juice
Jordan’s Granola (my favorite!!!) – 4.27 Euros
Last night’s Crepes
Fresh Fruits
Orange Juice
Tea
We have a boulangerie nearby, so from time to time, we buy some croissants. My favorite are Oranais, which is a croissant with apricot.
Maison Bourgeon Tea – Goji Party (click here for their website)
I always have a Kellogg’s Extra bar (grilled almond and chocolate) in my handbag for an emergency snack, but sometimes, I’ll also have one for breakfast.
Yogurt Bowl– Greek yogurt, banana, blueberry, seeds, goji berry seeds, and honey
I also like Greek yogurt, banana, kiwi, blueberry, seeds, and raspberry coulis
I love my Dolce Gusto coffee machine. Coffee pods are convenient as I’m the only one who drinks coffee at home. I don’t have to make a whole pot of coffee each time. Here’s my Cappuccino in the photo above.
Sometimes, instead of coffee, I like to have a cup of hot tea. I don’t like the vanilla, caramel, chocolate type. I’m more of the fruity type.
One of the easiest way for us to have fruits is with Smoothies. I usually prepare these during Spring / Summer. I’ll put banana, orange juice, pineapple juice, sometimes apple juice, and whatever fruit is in season. I’ve recently tried using coconut milk and it’s pretty good too.
Galette de Riz / Rice Cake with Chocolate
Hot Tea
Strawberry-Raspberry Smoothie
BREAKFAST (if you have time to prepare for it)
Egg Sandwich (toasted bread + butter + omelet + slice of ham (optional)
French Toast with Caramelized Banana
Maple Syrup
Fruit Smoothie
Simple Pancakes
Maple Syrup
Crepes
Sugar / Nocciolata / Jam
Waffles
Sugar
*To save time, you can make the batter the night before and keep it in the refrigerator.
Sometimes I also like something salty in the morning. Obviously, I don’t have this very often as this is Smoked Salmon. But from time to time, why not? Just the avocado and scrambled is good too.
SUNDAY BRUNCH
In our family, we love Sunday Brunch. Unfortunately, the Husband works most weekends, so we really cherish this moment when we are all together. Plus, we usually prepare brunch together. What differs our brunch from our breakfast is that we usually prepare a salty + a sweet dish and we take our time to enjoy our meal. I love that!
Scrambled Eggs
Bacon (fried or baked)
Avocado
Tomato
Bread
Porridge. I’m not a fan of Porridge, but the husband is. This was for Father’s Day.
We usually always have Pancakes for our Brunch. This is a brunch staple.
Waffles with strawberries, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. Waffles, but the gourmande type. LOL.
I love soft-boiled eggs and this is an easy way to enjoy them.
Toasted bread, soft-boiled eggs, roasted tomatoes, black sesame seeds, balsamic vinaigrette, salt, and black pepper. Delicious!
FRESH FRUITS
One thing that never leaves our breakfast / brunch table are fruits. Here are some of my favorites. By the way, I usually buy my fruits from the store, Grand Frais.
Banana, Blueberry, Strawberry, Mango, Lemon, and Rhubarb (Spring / Early Summer)
Clementine (Winter)
Watermelon, Doughnut Peach, Banana, Nectarine, and Melon (Summer)
My favorite fruit in France – Melon.
My favorite fruit in the Philippines – Mango.
I’m not sure if I was able to give you some new breakfast ideas, but here are just some of the food we have for breakfast.
Now … how come, as a Filipino, I didn’t feature any Pinoy breakfast? It’s because I haven’t had the opportunity to make some because of the ingredients. But one word – Silog. You gotta try it if you can.
