Christmas in the Philippines starts in September!

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Hey, you! 😊

Did you think I was kidding when you read the title of this post? Nope! Indeed, Christmas in the Philippines starts in September. Once it is the BER months, you can gradually see the festive season around you more and more. It's in the songs playing in the background, the decors on the window display, the gifts for sale, Christmas lights indoors and outdoors, just to name a few ...

Why is it that way? I have no idea! For as long as I can remember, it's just been ... that way. It starts with Christmas in our Hearts by Jose Mari Chan on the radio and lasts until mid-January. Or until it's time to celebrate Sinulog. This is why it is known as, "The Longest Season Christmas in the World" and many are proud of this!

I haven't celebrated Christmas in the Philippines in 10+ years. God-willing, we will go next year. Fingers crossed. Honestly, I miss Christmas in the Philippines, although celebrating it for 4 months feels a bit ridiculous. But I do miss the traditions we follow: Simbang Gabi, Noche Buena, Parols, Manito-Manita, Carolling ...

By the way, we went to the Philippines last summer and it was amazing. Have you seen the video above? Going back home felt like finally breathing fresh air in my lungs after what felt like months of suffocation. That time, however short it was, did so much good for us. And now, I'm counting the days till we go back - hopefully for Christmas next year. 🤞

What are your traditions for Christmas?

xoxo Elodie
